Water Quality Assessment

This first set of documents defines the condition of the creek using water quality data collected on site dating back to the mid 1980's, and/or using land-use information on the surrounding areas. These documents were mostly written by Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

EPA Approved 303(d) List of Impaired Waters:
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation released a list of Tennessee streams, rivers, reservoirs, and lakes that did not meet water quality standards in 2016. (The 303d list for 2010 is also shown for comparison.) Oostanaula Creek is listed in this document for both sediment and pathogens (bacteria).

Total Maximum Daily Loads:
Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act establishes the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) program. A TMDL is a study that: 1) Quantifies the amount of a pollutant in a stream, 2) Identifies the sources of the pollutant, and 3) Recommends regulatory or other actions that may need to be taken in order for the stream to cease being polluted.
A site-specific TMDL has been developed for both sediment and pathogens.
