Water Quality Assessment

The condition of the creek based on water quality data, and/or land-use information.

Watershed Management Plan

The US Federal Clean Water Act was amended in 1987 adding Section 319 requiring states to develop restoration or management plans for impaired waterbodies to curb nonpoint sources of pollution. Section 319 also authorizes the EPA to issue federal funds to states to aid in implementing appropriate management programs to address these nonpoint sources. By targeting specific areas and land practices within a watershed, available federal and state cost-sharing funds can be used more efficiently to address known or potential pollution problems and protect water quality.

As such, a restoration plan is under development for the area building upon established partnerships and accomplishments. Water quality data from the published TMDLs and current water quality sampling collections are being incorporated into a pollutant flux model. UT is interpreting the results of this analysis to develop strategies to improve water quality in Oostanaula Creek in conjunction with input from local and federal officials and stakeholders of the watershed.

The resulting analysis may be read in it's entirity below:
Oostanaula Creek Watershed Non-Point Source Pollutant Inventory (85p)

From these land and water analyses, appropriate BMPs are recommended to reduce erosion, bacteria and other pollutant problems from areas identified as critical. The results of the field monitoring, model analysis and suggested practices for improving water quality in Oostanaula Creek are summarized in this technical report below.
